These core roadblocks to change have been identified by leading-edge evolutionary research into the human condition. And they affect almost all of us on our path.
Of the three obstacles I noted and the most overarching one---which plays a part in nearly every other barrier to true transformation---is the hardwiring of our evolutionary past.
This ancient programming evolved over a long period during our early human and animal history. Everything about the way we're wired---our instincts, habits, desires and fears--developed in response to a world that was unimaginably different than the one we're living in now.
If you think about it, our animal lineage dates back about 600 million years---so we've been animals for eons longer than we've been humans. This is the main memory we have when we connect to animal spirits and totems! And even our evolution as self-reflective human beings emerged at a time that was radically different than the present day.
The result is that our most basic impulses and instinctive responses are a mismatch for our modern lives and world.
Our "human nature" made sense when life was merely about survival. But that same human nature is not at all well-suited for the complexities, challenges and potentials of the world we're living in---or, maybe even more importantly, the one we hope to create.
If you really think about it, we're essentially running an outdated "operating system." And it's blocking the highest possibilities we could fulfill and the greatest leaps we want to make, personally and collectively.
How can we build a new world using "code" that's millions of years old?
Today's environment, for all its challenges, offers opportunities to live very differently. Many of us are frustrated because we sense that humankind could be--should be--orders of magnitude beyond where we are.
Yet we don't do it. Why? Because we're deeply patterned to behave and respond in ways that are antithetical to our higher flourishing.
You've probably seen the effects everywhere--not only in yourself and your life, but in your work and your efforts to bring about change in society or culture.
Virtually all the dilemmas we face personally and as a society stem from the limitations of our primitive nature.
The truth is, we've been plagued by the same problems since time immemorial, because we're trying to solve them from the limited perspective of this conditioned state.
We can tackle all the world's issues from the outside, trying to engineer solutions and fixes---but if the world is still inhabited by unconscious humans wired for crude survival, we'll never achieve the heights we feel called to reach.
Here's the remarkable news, though: if we can recognize and evolve beyond this root nature---"upgrade our operating system," so to speak---a whole universe of higher capacities becomes accessible to us, and we're able to express our ideals for humanity with an ease we only dreamed was possible.
The limitations imposed by our ingrained motives---such as our familiar, almost irresistible impulse to keep things small, comfortable, and status quo---then cease to be barriers to our creativity, energy, and power.
The burning spiritual question, of course, is can we really do that? Can we actually bypass this antiquated system of innate tendencies?
Is our deepest human nature a fixed, solid and immutable thing, as so many of us have heard and accepted---or can it be transcended.
Many spiritual and psychological disciplines do insist that such fundamental, radical change is a pipe dream. "We're only human," is the common refrain---and some believe that's all we'll ever be.
They suggest that we can grow a little, change a little, make modest progress or incremental improvements---but never actually "blow the lid off."
And that's where I part ways with those approaches. I've seen and experienced how people can propel themselves into an exceptional and unprecedented new way of being human---and relatively quickly.
I've discovered that by awakening the evolutionary impulse within us, or what I call our "evolutionary self," we can take a giant step beyond this obsolete operating system.
We can shift into an orientation toward life that brings forth our latent and emerging human capacities, and become the humans we know we were meant to be.
What would be possible if you could evolve beyond this ancient, outmoded conditioning?
Imagine your life infused with creativity, depth, energy and resilience. Imagine showing up for each present moment ready and able to respond with wisdom and clarity, trusting that the facilities you need will be available--unobstructed by old conditioning, habits and filters.
Imagine the new paradigms of leadership, relationship, collaboration, and more that would emerge from larger numbers of people embodying these capacities.
Imagine a world in which more of us--all of us--evolved to express these potentials--a world in which we naturally did so.
If this is who you've dreamed or imagined you could be, you were right.
What we're really talking about is changing the core nature of what it means to be human--and challenging all of our assumptions about how far we can go with that. It's that big.
We can find deeper access points to connect with and activate the evolutionary self within us.
We can become acquainted with the impulse of evolution, and learn how to draft on its momentum. We can learn to recognize the primitive motivations of our ego, and discover where we get the will and motivation to choose (and act from) a different orientation.
We can explore how the essential practice of meditation prepares us to engage in life with greater clarity and wisdom. And in the most practical contexts, we find out how to cultivate new kinds of evolutionary relationships, leadership and culture.
We've begun a spiritually inspired and infused relationship to life that is sourced from this extraordinary, enlightened part of our nature--and we're equipped with the tools, awareness, experience and community to help us sustain it.
If accelerating your growth far beyond the constraints of the past sounds like the spiritual step that would serve your highest aspirations, then I invite you to join me and a remarkable gathering of kindred spirits and journey together into an evolutionary relationship to life.
