Dreams and magick are closely connected, particularly in the early forms of Shamanism that gave rise to the various systems of magick throughout the world. Learning the language of your subconscious via dreams can be a great source of personal knowledge and power. Having become familiar with their dreams the next step for many Shamans was to learn to become self-aware within the dream itself and interact with it. This is still done by tribal Shamans today, and by Pagans such as Chaos Mages, Technomages, and Pagans who are recreating the Shamanistic branches of Celtic and Norse spiritual systems.
This technique is called “Lucid Dreaming” and has also crossed over into the New Age and Psychology fields, which has lead to the discovery of easy and effective ways to attaining this state and making use of it. Today, as with most things, the mainstream trend is towards using pricey technology. From lights that, placed by the bed, come on just enough to wake the person up enough to become aware of their dream, to vibrating bracelets that do a similar job. However there are two traditional Craft methods work just as well and are within the reach of everyone.
The first technique is repetitive autosuggestion that when a particular situation occurs, or you see a particular thing, then you will realize you are dreaming and become conscious in the dream. The best trigger is something that you wouldn’t see in normal waking life, such as a striped rose or a purple giraffe. You can do this verbally “Whenever I see (your trigger) I will realize I am dreaming”; or by imagining/experiencing yourself dreaming then seeing the trigger and ‘waking up’ in the dream.
The second way to increase your chances of having a lucid dream is, if you wake up after having a dream, lie back down and re-experience the dream you had. As you do so remind yourself that you are consciously doing this, and there is a good chance that you will find yourself aware within the continuing dream. This happens because you are returning, consciously, to the same level of perception you were when you were dreaming previously.
Once you have attained the ability to dream lucidly there are a number of things you can do with this skill. Firstly, in a dream you are free of the limitations of the waking world including things such as gravity, and actions having consequences. This raises some interesting possibilities which are fun to explore for a while before going on to more ‘serious’ work. Doing this will help motivate you to achieve the lucid dreaming state, learn how far you can mould dreams, and the characteristics of the lucid dream state.
After a while this ‘fun’ aspect of lucid dreaming begins to pale and you can start to explore the ‘deeper’ aspects of this special state. People can enter the Astral or Etheric realm through dreams and, by doing this with lucid dreams; you can find a system of projection that works best for you. You also find out the difference between Astral projection; where you project your consciousness into the inner planes, and Etheric projection; where your consciousness is focused within your energy body which can travel on the physical plane to any part of the world, or out into space.
In some modern magickal literature the two are confused under the general heading of “Astral Projection”. The two states overlap, as do the Astral and Etheric planes, but are quite distinct in their ‘feel’ and effect. Particularly in dreams. Etheric projections tend to result in clairvoyant dreams of things happening in the here and now and, on rare occasions, the figure of the dreamer being seen by people they were ‘visiting’. Etheric projection may also be the basis of the shape shifting associated with Witches and Shamans and their “going forth in the form of a Hare” or other power animal. In the Etheric state there can be some interaction between the projector and the environment in that the projector may be able to move lightweight objects. Also damage to the etheric ‘double ’might be mirrored in their physical body due to damage of the energy field, or psychosomatically because of the projector beliefs.
Astral projection on the other hand means projection of consciousness into the astral planes that are totally different from the physical world. Current magickal worldview has it that the astral planes condense down into the etheric, then the physical, worlds. The further you travel from these condensed areas, the more exotic your experiences become. One classic way of checking which plane you are on is to evoke a cube, such as a dice or Rubik’s cube, and endeavor to see all six sides at once. If you fail then you are either lucid dreaming, or on the etheric plane, but if you can it is a good indicator that you are in the Astral realms.
Projecting from a lucid dream can be done consciously, by willing it. But it can be made easier by giving yourself the suggestion that, as you climb a ladder or move upward in any other way, you are projecting or focusing your consciousness outside your body. Some people suddenly become self-aware just after they have passed from the physical into the etheric or astral planes. Usually this is as part of a dream where they are stuck or cannot move in some form or another.
In lucid dreaming this is caused by sleep where paralysis, part of your brain is switched off to avoid you acting out your dreams. With the body paralyzed this is a good chance to will yourself to leave the body – if you can remember to get over the panic of not being able to move! Concentrating on ideas/images of floating or flying free can cause this problem to become a doorway into realms beyond the physical. The same can be true of the ‘running and not getting anywhere’ dreams. Focus on the idea that you can fly, as this is usually indicative that you have reached the Etheric/Astral boarder and the medium you are travelling through has too low a density for the etheric body to be able to gain a grip.
Once on the Astral plane a whole new set of challenges and experiences await you. This is where physical reality has its roots and you may see glimpses of potential futures, meet beings that are particular to this aspect of reality, and see the workings of the multiverse itself. Hopefully this is where the experiences with lucid dreaming will pay off, as all the beings and events you have experienced in that state are part of your own personality. If you have been interpreting your dreams then the symbolism you encounter should tell you if what you encounter is an external being or a projected part of your own persona. At this level of being your Pagan practice and rituals are truly integrated into the Universe and have powerful effects.

Astral Travel Tips
Here are some tips to remember when astral traveling:
Clear your mind by unwinding from stress in the normal way you would, do breathing exercises to relax the heart, lower your state of consciousness to be still.
Light some soothing incense to calm down and light candles,
Play music to liven the mood or sanctify it,
Recite affirmations and get into ritual mindset, for astral travel is ritualistic in that it requires concentration, methods, practice, and application of techniques and discipline.
Smudge yourself, your aura, and your space with sage, cedar, juniper, frankincense, and/or lavender,
You may cast a circle around you for protection, hold crystals, carry objects with you, or ask deities or beings to assist and protect you. Imagine being surrounded by a radiance of white light.

Meditation Techniques:
What to do BEFORE You Meditate
Your astral travel success depends largely on your self-esteem, your belief of it, your confidence; you’re at onement with consciousness, and your ability to accept. Your mind controls every single aspect of what you perceive. The reason meditation must quiet the mind and dissolve into silence is so that you can receive true objective enlightenment without a subjective mind picking what it wants you to see, and you must be prepared to face the truth. If you cannot during or after meditation and astral travel, you stagnate and miss out on beneficial transformation.
On that note, know yourself very well. Through trial and error you will learn, but it’s also important to know your limitations, your strengths, and your weaknesses. On a foundation, you can choose to build on top of it or destroy it to build a new, or just leave for new beginnings. You have the power, always. Enlightenment is literally being aware of who you are, it’s not just some divine, unable-to-grasp skill gifted only to yogi masters who have worked for 60 long years. That time is consequential, but the wisdom found therein is not limited to time/age, but to experience. It is hoped that with how wisdom goes, the older ones have spent their time progressing, rather dillydallying around or stagnating.

Repeat, reread, reuse.
Read material like this again from time to time. See how your perspective has changed, if it has changed, if it will not change. Repeat practices or astral intentions that you have done. Don’t be afraid to recycle the same materials into new methods for self-learning and expansion. You will always gain a new perspective on anything you’ve seen before. A new emotion or feeling or thought will evoke naturally. When a new movie comes out, you watch it once, and if you go back, you see tons of things you missed, and if you go back for more consecutive visits, you’ll really start to understand just exactly the full spectrum of what the movie was meaning to portray. Again, it goes back to your mind and how it picks and chooses for you. It is a lot of work, this path of enlightenment (awareness), but you will get better with time, don’t worry.
By the above note, it is crucial to record your experiences, your thoughts, your emotions, and your intentions in a journal or blog whenever you travel. There are so many learning opportunities embedded within what you think, feel, write, and say. The same goes with a regular journal and a dream journal. I delight in reading old journals from 2006 and I learn something new about myself each time I look back on it.
Dreaming and Astral Travel are one in the same. It is so important to have dream recall skills, because dreaming is astral travel while asleep, and meditation is like astral travel when awake. An unexamined dream is like an unopened letter.
Meditation is a conscious portal to astral travel. To learn meditation is to learn astral travel.
Grounding does not have to be tried, it can be done simply by sitting on the floor, laying on your back, and just recalling all your problems. Allow the recall for each stress be forgotten and absorbed by the earth.
Astral travel can be done anywhere, at any time, in any place. Too often do people get tripped up in what is and isn’t astral travel. Where we are all unique beings, so are our methods.
Discipline is crucial in all things. If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again. No esteemed novel or piece of literature is composed cover to cover without being a rough draft. With patience and diligence, you win the word count. Then, you reread each chapter and edit accordingly to further progress its finalized publication. Patience is a virtue, and so is Diligence.
Take a chakra evaluation test or write out on a list how you broke the tenets of each chakra. In learning your faults, you automatically correct them. Our Clients receive these free from RavenStar Enchantments upon request).
When traveling, leaving your body is difficult, yet simple once you get the hang of it. Traveling is literally as simple as willing yourself to do it, and seeing through your mind’s eye. If you’ve ever read a book and could visually imagine everything, that’s what astral travel is like.
A lot of the difficulty in people is because they try to work around a concept of an opening or a door. This is difficult to imagine. Astral travel is not like walking through some door or portal and you’re suddenly there. People will exhaust all of their mental energy on try to figure out how to get there, and then they give up and call it a failure, and never return out of self-disappointment. To get there is to be there, it’s that simple, but how does one simply be there? A good way to get to the realm of the astral is to literally command yourself to be there, You Are Already There, and your destination is all around you.
The Astral Realm is pure consciousness; it is exactly how you see it in your own way. Healing can be performed, dreaming can be performed, altered states of consciousness, magic, enlightenment… whatever is your desire, intentions, or destination, it will be performed.
While in astral body, you are 100% you, but in energy form, in a way. You have no limitations in this form. The only limitation is your belief of it; back to the mind’s subjectivity.
A comprehension of the Fourth Dimension will largely aid you in your travels, and as will sacred geometry. It is all linked, and makes up who you are as a multi-dimensional being.
Ask and you shall receive, persist and you shall conceive. You’ll get it, you’ll figure it out. Try your best, commit to learning through trial and error, and by god, ask for help when you need it! “Ask and you are a fool for five minutes, never ask and you are a fool forever.” Some refuse to ask out of fear of embarrassment. Try your best, eventually you’ll get it, but your experience is not downgraded in comparison to another because you asked for help and you couldn’t do it all on your own. That’s what help is there for, do you think those people who do get it got there all on their own, no, they asked for help also. You’re still a very special being no matter who helped you because of the sole fact that you were able to get there to begin with, don’t sit in the throne of the ego. Allow assistance to come through from Cosmos, deities, guides, and friends. One day, you will be asked for help and be delighted to share your tokens.
Above all, there is no wrong or right way to astral travel. Many people see gray versions of themselves and they see the silver cord. This can happen, and you can astral project into the physical plane, not just the astral plane.
This is the realm of infinite and nothingness. It is both small and yet both wide. Know your boundaries, know your purpose; it will keep you safe, sane, and productive.
You can actually go on voyages or trips to cosmic places, astral places, and attempt to communicate with the dead or other realms/beings.
If you are in trouble or wish to return, it is typically as simple as willing yourself to be back in the physical plane. Open your eyes, stand up tall, shake your feet, jump, and drink water. Remind yourself you are a physical being, feel the earth, feel the third dimensional world.

How To Have An Out of Body Experience:
First Steps
Many are fascinated with astral travel but don't know where to begin. Let’s jump right in and get as practical as we can about something often labeled as mysterious.
First and Foremost: Intention
Your intention doesn’t have to be incredibly detailed, the main thing is the feeling behind your desire.
Maybe you want to gain insight. Heal. Maybe you wish to re-awaken a sense of energy and awe you possessed as a child. Or sure, maybe you are simply curious.
Just make certain that when you break it down, something positive is at the root.
Maybe you don’t quite know what you’ll gain from this, but your intent is generally in the direction of growth, health, greater harmony, etc. Before concentrating on how to have an out of body experience, have a why.
Next comes what we call “setting the scene.” This means getting mind and body in an optimal state for out of body experiences.
Your mind must get into the right state. To attain the required relaxation and focus, we’ll use the word “meditation”–but don’t worry if you have no prior meditation experience. There are meditation technologies and various techniques that help get your brainwaves into the right state.
Vibrations
As you may know, humans undergo different cycles of sleep.
Generally, there are the alpha, theta, and delta brainwave cycles. These are literally different frequencies that your brain resonates at when in the different cycles of sleep.
But your brain is always vibrating at different rates, not just during sleep. Science teaches that everything vibrates.
Your brainwaves affect brain chemistry and thus experience. Someone who just meditated will likely have a very different response to inconvenient traffic versus someone who just had a nasty fight with their spouse.
Likewise, there are brainwaves more conducive to out of body experiences.
Certain research indicates that chemicals released in the pineal and pituitary glands may have serious effects on how our brains organize all of the sensory inputs that result in what we call experience. If a part of your brain intuitively knows how to have an out of body experience, it’s these glands.
Here’s the comforting part: all of this won’t seem as daunting when you keep one vital fact in mind: our consciousness experiences a very different reality every night while dreaming.
Since our brains process and react to stimuli, who’s to say that the external stimuli we experience in waking life is more valid or “real” than the internal stimuli we experience in the dream state?
Please re-consider what most people deem “normal,” it will loosen you up and be a great tool as you explore the world of out of body experiences.
Which leads to this:
Tips for Beginners
Your habits in one state (waking, dreaming, out of body experiences) all affect one another. Therefore, be aware in your waking life. Even stopping a few times per day to take some breaths and say, “Here I am. I’m alive,” will help.
Some more tips for “setting the scene”:
Don’t eat too too closely to your session, and don’t go in hungry either.
Needless to say, too much caffeine or sugar prior is not recommended.
Wear comfortable clothes, and do your version of relaxing. Remember, some people need totally dark rooms and complete silence, while others actually feel a certain pressure in such an environment. Sometimes well-meaning tips lists forget such facts.
Let your intuition and your smile guide you. Even an article like this on how to have an out of body experience is not quite the same as an instruction manual for your DVD player: there’s room for you to make it your own!
Starting your session at a time other than when you go to bed may help (otherwise you could just fall asleep!). Also, it is recommended that another person be physically present in the room with you only if this is someone you know and trust completely.
Again, brainwave entrainment to quiet the mental chatter and nudge the brain into its more mystical states have helped many get over the initial hump, proving to be the lynchpin in their toolbox of obe techniques.

We live in an invisible sea of consciousness or mind substance, an atmosphere of thoughts and their associated feelings which circles the planet. Each one of us receives mental energy from this global mind atmosphere or mind belt. We process it through our own consciousness and then transmit it back into the mind belt.

In this way, our contribution to world consciousness is automatic. As people think and feel, so they affect the mind belt in their own way.

Because the human race has chosen to be unaware of its telepathic ability, people react to the impressions that arise within them without being consciously aware of the source of the source of these thoughts and feelings.

We each have a choice as to what frequency of consciousness we will entertain. By raising one’s consciousness, you improve the quality of the mind belt and also receive higher-frequency impressions from it.

The seven major chakras are traditionally viewed from the front of the body. They appear as doorways of consciousness, located just in front of the physical body. Each chakra is a spinning vortex of etheric energy which channels its own specific frequency band of consciousness to or from the local environment.

From the base of the spine upwards, these are the traditional names of seven major chakras:

chakras 1. Root chakra (base of the spine)
2. Sacral chakra
3. Solar plexus chakra
4. Heart chakra
5. Throat chakra
6. Brow chakra (forehead)
7. Crown chakra (above the head)

The root, sacral and then the solar plexus chakras are activated as children grow into adulthood. Having reached adulthood, many people go on to activate their heart chakras and some even venture into the realm of the throat chakra during deep meditation.

The functions of the chakras are as follows:

1. Instinctual. The root chakra prepares vitality, or life energy, for the chakras above it. It provides the base frequency of human existence including the instinct for survival.

2. Emotional. The sacral chakra powers the basic emotions and passions of human life.

3. Intellectual. The solar plexus chakra is used in the development of basic intellect or mental ability. Examples of such thought include the performing of arithmetic and the operating of machinery.

4. Holistic. The heart chakra is developed as emotional issues are resolved and integrated. In heart-centered consciousness, mind, body, and spirit are seen as facets of a human being which can all achieve balance and wholeness. The higher level of heart-centered consciousness opens the person to spiritual awareness. Thus, the heart is the gateway to spiritual consciousness.

5. Creative. The throat chakra’s function is creativity. It is a higher mental faculty, capable of inspiring the imagination to new possibilities. The development of the throat chakra results in gaining the power of conscious creation, the ability to succeed in consciously transforming circumstances to preferred, new realities. This is also the home level of soul consciousness. In the everyday, physical world where attention is often focused at the level of solar plexus thinking, the soul attempts to add helpful ideas to the physical mind through the faculty of intuition.

6. Global. The brow chakra is the home frequency of awareness that encompasses all locations on the planet. Existing above the soul realms, it is home to the angelic realms. While archangels are thought of as human-like figures, a more apt description is that of the global spirit – an awareness that encircles the globe, constantly sensing individual needs for their support. They bring healing, hope and support to those who are open to their presence.

7. Cosmic. The crown chakra is your connection to the universe on a cosmic scale. Its complete activation by the spiritual adept results in the ultimate state of human achievement and enlightenment, that of cosmic consciousness.

You can call the chakras by their physical position, like solar plexus, or by their function, like intellectual. The choice is yours. Their names, by function, are:

1. Instinctual chakra (root)
2. Emotional chakra (sacral)
3. Intellectual chakra (solar plexus)
4. Holistic chakra (heart)
5. Creative chakra (throat)
6. Global chakra (brow)
7. Cosmic chakra (crown)

Development of your intuition as part of your spiritual growth is something stressed by many different spiritual paths. In most of the Pagan systems it is frequently linked to specific practices such as dowsing, healing, and divination rather than thought of as a skill on its own. Many Pagans I have met tend to think of it purely as a spiritual skill rather than something that involves the integrated use of all the five physical senses, mental faculties, and psychospiritual abilities. Unless people are aware of this then intuition works erratically and cannot be relied on for useful information.

In the last century the use of psychology in training and learning has suggested that the best way to learn and develop many skills is through experimentation and non-serious gameplay. This has crossed over into covens and magickal training groups as the “bridging techniques” mentioned in this write later. Enhancing the senses in this way is the psychic equivalent of the famous Bruce Lee quote "Before I learned the art, a punch was just a punch, and a kick, just a kick. After I learned the art, a punch was no longer a punch, a kick, no longer a kick. Now that I understand the art, a punch is just a punch and a kick is just a kick.

The idea encapsulated in this quote is that by cycling unconscious skills though the conscious mind, and re-integrating them you can fine-tune, understand, and enhance them. It also means that many times you can access the source of the intuitive feeling and discover its source.

This is the same situation for many professions where reliance on instinct/intuition plays a significant part such as in the military, police, or fire service. In both of these jobs the people are highly trained, and their environmental awareness is a key part of their job. This combination means that minute changes in the environment can be detected in the same way as I sensed the leak. A subtle noise, change in pressure, or something out of place in the environment can trigger an intuitive feeling about what is going on, or about to happen.

I train daily, and after 56 years at it make it a fun game, at ‘tuning in’ to a situation or opponent using peripheral vision, mirroring stance and distance, and avoiding being seen by staying in their blind spot. Even my new students start to develop a sense of when to move, or what is coming next after a few minutes of working with a partner as they pick up on the subtle cues and micromovements that precede a change in direction, or an attack.in the psychic realms. Then we would change partners and do the same exercise with someone new, which helps refine the skills we are learning even more.

To make this part of everyday life I suggested that we use this level of awareness consciously in crowded areas such as busy supermarkets to evade being run into with a shopping trolley, and to avoid running in to anyone else by lack of awareness. This exercise has a profound effect, enhancing sensory-based intuition to the point where you move and flow with the other shoppers as part of your automatic alertness.

I got this exercise to share in a city although it evolved from doing this as a child living in the forest and moving in dense forested areas without touching a single branch or thorn bush.

This awareness of minimal cues becomes a ‘springboard’ for the development of the psychic and spiritual levels of awareness. Frequently we miss these more subtle aspects of intuition because we are not sensitive enough for them to reach our conscious mind. This is what training the senses to pick up subtleties helps us to do. This can be enhanced by meditation, particularly the systems that help you to notice your thoughts without attachment or trying to influence them.

This is the point at which doing readings for others can be of great help. Focusing on the system -, be it Runes, Tarot, or lines in the hand - gives the conscious mind something to do while the subconscious picks up small physical cues from the client interspersed with foretastes of potential futures, or situations of importance to the client from the mental and spiritual planes. These latter fragments can be startlingly accurate, but are frequently ascribed to the tools themselves giving the information which can be a barrier to further personal development. When the intuitive faculty is fully integrated the results for the person can be an enhanced sense of purpose and their place in the world.

But however good a person’s intuition becomes it is still a “wild talent”, subject to misinterpretation and mistakes. Ueshiba Morihei, the founder of the martial art of Aikido I read, was highly intuitive, to the point of being able to avoid bullets according to several sources. Although he was still a nightmare to go on a journey with according to many of the same sources. At the slightest sense of danger he, and anyone with him, would have to change their mode of transport and even the route to where they were going, or return home. There was little or no evidence that these precautions actually saved anyone, but because his intuitions had frequently served him well he tended to over-rely on them. Since he was held in wide regard in Japanese society by the time he started to do this he could get away with these actions, but I doubt anyone else could.

So, as you develop your intuition make sure you stay grounded on the physical plane to take full advantage of the ‘edge’ it can bring you, and use it in a balanced manner. In the next article we'll look at the way you can become more psychic, but also how if you are not careful some people and corporations will try to use your sensitivity to their own ends.

Let's Talk About Your Intuition
Why concern yourself with working to find and use your intuition? Focusing on and acquainting yourself with your “sixth sense” can bring benefits every day in big issues and small. Intuition is a gift we all have and can decide to heighten through our intention and attention.
Most of us have experienced flashes of insight from time to time. Perhaps we simply knew who was calling when the phone rang. Maybe we received the impression that we needed to place a phone call to a friend or relative who needed some cheering. The emotion of their difficulty arrived within us without benefit of letter or phone call to us.
Those of us who have raised youngsters have many times known what was troubling them or needed “fixing” long before any words were exchanged. We just knew. Our intuition told us.
Relationships of any kind seem to bring out either the best or the worst in us but what better place to practice your intuitive skills? Saving frayed nerves and general emotional upset by understanding the problem from the other person’s point of view before speaking would be worth the extra time spent mentally investigating.
The interesting thing is the more attention you place on your correct insights, in essence congratulating yourself for paying attention and taking action, the more correct insights you will have!
Any time you have a concern about going ahead with a plan or course of action, business or personal, being able to discern the probable outcome or establish better alternatives through “extra sensory” discovery is a definite plus. It can keep you from unnecessary side-tracks and detours.
The subjects you may choose to intuit are quite unlimited. For instance suppose you have been attempting to choose a new health care provider. You now have narrowed the field to two candidates. They both seem well qualified and come with trustworthy recommendations. What to do? Simply get quiet. Ask yourself who would be the best choice for me and my health issues? Many times your intuitive self can see some underlying qualities of the doctors that consciously you may have no knowledge of. Receiving more of the facts, your choice will be both easier and better.
As simple a thing as feeling that you ought to take a different route home rather than the usual freeway, can avoid needless traffic jams or accidents. As you begin to trust your extra sensory self, you will find life moves more smoothly.
I can remember many years ago in my early days as a Dr. of Metaphysics, I had an advantage whenever I would pay close attention to my feelings concerning a client. In other words, I would look at their desires and know intuitively whether what they were asking for was the kind of desire they would be able to handle.
Upon sensing potential desires, occasionally I would realize I needed to show them a different kind or situation than what they requested in order to satisfy them. Also it helped me to realize who was a genuinely motivated client and who, in all probability, would look virtually forever and never apply the work needed for spiritual evolution of soul. Need I say it saved me many wasted futile hours of driving here and there?
Where does our intuition come from? Where is its home base? Intuition is part of our subconscious gifts many times amplified by our personal guides and teachers. Because that is true we can make the best, most accurate and concise use of it by becoming quiet and contemplative when faced with choices. Some people spend a few minutes a day by themselves in meditation. Others figuratively may simply step out of the bustle of the day removing themselves into the quiet of their own minds just to think. Whatever allows us to hear the still small voice inside of us will bring answers.
Fortunately “tuning in” can be done absolutely anywhere, anytime. As long as you can simply decide to “hear” your inner self for a minute or two, it can be done in the middle of the noisiest surroundings you can imagine. The next time you are at a ball game or standing by the bus stop, give it a try. See what you might be telling yourself that can be of use today or tomorrow!

What Does Your Natal Chart Say About Money and Wealth?

Key Factors to Look For in the Natal Chart For Determining Money Potential:

The condition of the 2nd house for one's personal assets: planets found within the house and their aspects; the ruler of the second house and its position by sign, house and aspect; and the sign on the cusp of the second house.

The condition of the 8th house for one's personal assets accumulated through partnership and/or marriage: planets found within the house and their aspects; the ruler of the eighth house and its position by sign, house and aspect; and the sign on the cusp of the eighth house.

The condition of the 11th house for one's personal assets accumulated through business and career: planets found within the house and their aspects; the ruler of the eleventh house and its position by sign, house and aspect; and the sign on the cusp of the eleventh house.

The condition of Venus, the natural ruler of the second house, and Jupiter, the planet of expansion. Also, look for where the signs Taurus and Sagittarius are found in the chart.

The chart ruler (ruler of the Ascendant) and its relationship to the rulers of the second and eighth houses. Also take note of any planets found in the second and eighth houses.

The condition of Saturn and Mars in the chart, in order to determine the native's drive and ambition. On their own, these factors do not show money potential, but they are contributing factors to accumulating wealth.

The second house rules possessions and attitudes towards money. The eighth house rules money accumulated through partnership or marriage. The eleventh house rules money accumulated through business and career.

You might notice a pattern here.
In fact, one can use derivative houses in order to determine the potential for personal assets from different areas of life. For example, the fifth house rules creativity, and the second house from the fifth house (if we were to consider the fifth house as we would the first house) is the sixth house. Conceivably, we could look to the 6th house to determine the potential for money earned from creative endeavors or creative hobbies. The fifth house also rules our offspring, so we could also look to the 6th house to find the potential for money earned through children (although that sounds a little off to me!).

Of course, these houses have more meanings, esoteric ones as well. We are simplifying here in order to study one particular aspect of life. See Important Notes below.

Many astrologers look to the second house ruler in order to get a good feel for the native's wealth potential. For example, if the sign on the cusp of the second house is Aries, the ruler of Aries is Mars. Therefore, Mars rules the second house in this example. Where is Mars found in the chart, and what aspects does it make? Mars might be found in Taurus in the second house, conjunct the Moon, trine Uranus and Pluto, square Jupiter, and opposite Neptune. This is a rather complex picture, but we can get some sense of the money potential of this individual.

This particular native has quite a few planets in the second house. In addition to Mars and the Moon mentioned above, he has the Sun and Mercury there as well, and Venus is in the first house but conjunct the second house cusp. With so much activity in the second house, one would expect the native to be quite focused on building up his personal assets. We can expect this person to do rather well for himself as a result, but the square of the second house ruler to Jupiter, and more notably the opposition to Neptune, suggests that he may easily spend a lot of the money he does make. As focused as he is on making money, he may have a tendency to over-indulge (square to Jupiter) and perhaps money may slip through his fingers a little too easily for him to accumulate much wealth (opposition to Neptune).

In reality, the native in question is quite content with his position. He is a hard worker, and has a philosophy about living in the here and now. In his case, he is not concerned about accumulating wealth. He does not want—he makes a fair amount of money.

I have found hard aspects of money significators to Neptune to be rather problematic. Hard aspects to Jupiter can be troublesome as well. One client, for example, had her chart read by an astrologer at the age of 18. She was told that because the ruler of her second house was conjunct Jupiter, she would never want for money. The reality was such that she never truly wanted for money, but she had a hard time holding on to it. In her thirties, for example, she made a fair amount of money, only to have it squandered by her husband. Neptune squares the second house ruler that is conjunct Jupiter, and it is making that square from the eighth house—the house of shared assets and money from partnerships/marriage.

The position and condition of both Saturn and Mars gives us a sense of the drive and ambition of the native. These traits can be important factors when money and wealth are earned by the native's own efforts. I have found that any aspect, hard or soft, between Mars and Saturn, gives some drive to succeed, with the hard aspects certainly more urgent.

It is important to note that if the native has only "easy" aspects involving the significators of money, there may not be enough drive or follow-through to both make and keep wealth. I have a relative who is a self-made woman, someone who worked her way up from a low position to the top. She has a yod configuration involving Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn. The sextile portion of the yod is Venus sextile Saturn, with Jupiter quincunx both Venus and Saturn. Mars trines Jupiter and squares Saturn. Essentially, Saturn forms difficult aspects to both Mars and Jupiter, and Mars and Jupiter are in trine. This type of mixed configuration (in which there are what are traditionally considered both "lucky" and "unlucky" aspects) is something to look for when you are trying to determine the potential for wealth or success that is of the self-made kind. Easy aspects alone do not seem to provide the "oomph" necessary to work hard and strive towards a lofty goal. One of the things that she believes to have been instrumental to her success is the fact that she does not shrink from challenges and does not fall apart when things around her seem to be falling apart. I suspect that her Sun and Mercury both trine Neptune play a role as well, because in addition to her ability to face up to challenges, her powerful intuition is part of the "formula" for her success. Especially as a woman from her generation and in her particular profession, she has had to rely on a certain level of faith (Neptune) and powerful faculties of intuition in order to succeed as she has.

Some interesting configurations for celebrities involving the ruler of the second house:

Oprah Winfrey's Venus (found in the second house on the cusp) conjuncts her Sun, sextiles her Moon, trines Jupiter, squares Saturn, quincunxes her Ascendant, and trines her Midheaven. Her Sun, Venus, and Mercury occupy her second house, and the second house ruler (Uranus) trines Mars and squares Neptune. Interestingly, her fifth, eighth, and tenth house rulers are the Sun and Venus, which are conjunct each other in the second house, and conjunct the second house cusp.

Hugh Hefner, a self-made man, has very little going on with his second house ruler, Venus! He does have a T-square involving Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune.

Arnold Schwarzenegger's Sun (second house ruler) is conjunct his second house cusp, conjunct Saturn and Pluto, and sextile Neptune.

Bill Gates has Jupiter conjunct Pluto in the second house, widely square Venus and Saturn (Venus and Saturn are conjunct), and sextile Neptune.

In her book, The Art of Predictive Astrology: Forecasting Your Life Events (1), Carol Rushman mentions that people with positive Jupiter-Neptune aspects can become wealthy, possibly through faith and belief. She has also seen Jupiter trine Saturn and even Jupiter square Saturn in charts of the wealthy. This book is filled with practical insights, and is a must-read for those students of astrology who are looking for excellent tips and pointers for their predictive work in astrology. The book contains more signs of the potential for wealth, as well as tips for making predictions for virtually every other area of life.

The condition of Venus in a chart can reveal quite a bit about your ability to attract money. Whether you are able to hold on to it is another story altogether. If Venus is in favorable aspect to a ruler of a "money house" (the second or eighth house, and to a lesser degree the eleventh and fifth houses), or is found in such a house, this is a good sign that your ability to attract money is high. Venus in  challenging aspect to Neptune can suggest difficulties holding onto money, especially when either Venus or Neptune rules a money house. Neptune in favorable aspect to Venus and/or Jupiter is a good sign with reference to attracting money into one's life.

In many charts of the wealthy or well-off, Saturn is associated with the second and/or eighth house. The aspect can be challenging (conjunct or square seem to be "better" aspects than the opposition), although it is generally found in addition to more favorable aspects involving such planets as Venus, Jupiter, and Neptune. Saturn adds ambition and realism, as well as sobriety to the picture. Saturn as a money significator gives motivation to hold onto money and to strive to make more money. If Saturn is associated with the money houses, the native is less likely to blow money once it's in his or her hands. There is also an attitude that hard work is necessary in order to both make and keep money. Take for example someone who has just won money through a lottery or slot machine—even if it's a small sum. While natives with Jupiter and/or Neptune challenging their money significators might put their earnings right back into the lottery/slot machine, natives with Saturn as a money significator will be more inclined to walk away while they're ahead (assuming they would waste their time gambling in the first place, which is actually unlikely!).

Beverly Flynn's new book, Astrology & Money: What's Your Wealth Quotient? (2), offers much information about the wealth potential in the natal chart. She discusses the "wealth planets", how to improve a low wealth "quotient", and offers a fun test to see how you rate in terms of your wealth potential (you can also compare your wealth quotient with famous wealthy people, whose charts she has analyzed with reference to wealth). Flynn also offers an insightful "new look" at money in the second half of the book—she looks at money and wealth from a metaphysical perspective after offering more traditional astrological indicators of money potential in the first part of the book. This is a recommended read for any astrology student who wants to dig a little more deeply into the astrology of money.

Transits
In his book, Predicting Love, Marriage, Sex & Money: A Workbook Text for Learning Predictive Astrology for the Beginning Astrologer or Continuing Student : A Simple Step-By-Step Approach (3), Timothy Edward Curley put forth an interesting theory that involves predicting money using the 2nd and 8th house rulers. Curley believes that we have money-friendly periods when Jupiter and/or Saturn are transiting trine, sextile, or conjunct the ruler of our 2nd house and/or our 8th house. He suggests saving during the money-friendly times in order to prepare for the more difficult times which he believes to be when Jupiter and/or Saturn are square or opposite the rulers of our 2nd or 8th houses.

In his book, Dynamic Astrology: Using Planetary Cycles to Make Personal and Career Choices, John Townley identifies a Jupiter cycle in which he believes that people are at their peak (in terms of productivity and opportunity) when Jupiter transits the first house. He suggests taking advantage of that time of "abundance and free resources" (4), as this is the peak of a cycle of opportunity that lasts approximately 12 years. For those interested in learning more about how to best take advantage of planetary cycles with regards to career moves and choices, John Townley's book is an insightful and practical read.

We have also found that when transiting Pluto trines or sextiles the ruler of our 2nd or 8th house, this can be a particularly favorable period for making money. Short-term transits that are generally considered favorable for increasing your wealth include Jupiter and Venus conjunctions, trines, and sextiles to money significators in your chart.

Important Notes
Although we are looking at the potential for accumulating wealth in a matter-of-fact way, I rarely look at, for example, the second house in such a black-and-white manner. We can easily assert that the second house rules money, possessions, and personal assets. However, the second house (and any house, for that matter) means a whole lot more than these simple keywords. I always keep in mind that the second house is essentially indicative of an individual's self-worth. We can see this concept more clearly when, for example, Saturn transits our second house and we come face to face with issues that force us to ask ourselves what exactly we feel we deserve. As a side note, and as a student of astrology since I was a child, I feel that I learn the most about the essential meaning of a particular house after Saturn has transited that house in my own chart. Perhaps it is a personal bias because Saturn is strong in my natal chart (in the first house and conjunct the Ascendant) and I may therefore be especially "tuned in" to the particular messages of Saturn. Whatever the case may be, I feel that Saturn has a way of showing us the practical side of any house at the beginning of its transit of that house, and as it moves through the house, this planet has a way of stripping it down to its essential meaning in a more esoteric or psychological sense.

When we consider that the second house rules our own sense of self-worth, we may be more equipped to understand, and to work with, the energies associated with our second house. Therefore, if a man has a difficult Neptune square to the ruler of his second house, instead of looking at it as "written in the stars" that he will be either financially impractical or get duped out of money by others (and feel defeated as a result), he can consider exactly what is behind that particular configuration. Perhaps, somewhere deep inside of him, he doesn't feel like he deserves the money he comes into. Perhaps he doesn't want to place too much value or emphasis on money itself, preferring to adopt a more spiritual attitude towards money. In the process, he may not pay the necessary attention to financial details and/or financial planning that will ensure his money is well taken care of. Once we can get to the root of the issue, we have the opportunity to work with what we have and what we are. If this work improves our financial standing, or at least our attitude towards our lives in this sense, then all the better. There is no reason to declare defeat.
