The
Origin of Gypsy
The
origin of the Gypsy must be clearly defined in the world today. And
though it is very difficult to define in actual definite and factual
terms there is much discrepancy associated with the term today
because of social stigmatism and complete misunderstandings. To the
fact that now today if someone jumps in a car and travels they call
themselves a gypsy. Not only is this a great disrespect to the
actuality of being Gypsy it borders on the line of prejudice. So we
of the Chillicothie accept the following description of who we are
and what we represent to be stable and factual and erase the
ambiguity wrapped around the term today.
Gypsy
is not a term; it is an ethnic lifestyle with a very traceable
history and subgroup.
Gypsy,
Roma or even Rom are very correct names associated with this subgroup
and ones that will get the blood line and practicing Gypsy an open
ear to those who call them such.
So,
diverse, nomadic and of an ethnic group would then be a good start in
defining what it is to be Roma, Rom or Gypsy.
Throughout
our history we have been comprised of many different groups of
people, and we do absorb others, or outsiders, and even other
cultures into our tribes as we migrated across the continents. This
has created a very "universal tribe" throughout the world
and our cosmology is a patchwork each with different cultures,
customs and languages. So Rom, Roma, Romani and Gypsy are outgrowths
of these various languages and dialects.
So
despite all the differences, the Gypsy, or Roma, do still share many
attributes in which they are made of 4 different tribes or nations
called Natsiya’s and have a belief equal to a God and devil and
polluted behavior is one that would be close to the relationship
with what we now call a Devil, the Romaniya (a study in this is
included for it sets the standards and enforces the beliefs that the
Roma adhere to), and at the core we are a people who, because of our
history and traditions, are adaptable to many changing conditions.
There
is a lot of conflicting information about where the Roma and Gypsies
originated and this is because they mainly migrated from the East and
they were originally thought to be Turkish or Nubian by the
Europeans. There is truth in the blood line that connects us to Egypt
and so this is why we were called Egyptians and later even ‘Gyptian’
by the Europeans. The origin of the name "Gypsy" is rooted
here.
One
most popularized theory of our Chillicothie Familia is that we are
from the Tribe of Abraham and descendants of his children by his
second wife, Keturah. And possible scripture denotes this in The Book
of Exodus concerning the migration of the Israelites.
My
ancestors would say "Egypt You See?" when called this in
Sicily before our family came here to the United States. Meaning "in
me there is more than Egyptian if that’s all you are seeing."
One
very popular belief is that we the Roma have our origins in India.
But even that belief is fragmented with disagreements from our elders
and not based on cold hard fact. But our history in India is worth
noting and the Roma/Gypsy in India has several versions traceable
through researching the Roma/Gypsy Foundation of India. And the fact
of the matter, like Buddhism in India, the Roma had many sects within
a common belief system and a Foundation was needed to draw these
aspects together as a common thread.
So
as the Roma migrated from Egypt into what is now called India. That
land had a very chaste system and the Roma were treated as the lowest
of citizens. But with the regards toward Magick they were constantly
called into council. After segregation, the People of India relocated
the Roma into a very hard mountain land called the Punjab which is
the far northwestern boarder. Even still they were consulted for
healing and Magick and even those who were epileptic were considered
Holy Men. The People of India again raised issues with money being
given to the Roma for sharing their Magick and herbals, and this was
manly influenced by the poor, for the gypsy doesn’t refuse help to
any in need, and the citizens took it upon themselves to attack the
Punjab and thus drove the Roma out to what is now called Romania.
Though some gypsies did stay in India and was absorbed in there
nationalities and became gurus but were and are still bloodline
Roma."
This
brought the Gypsy now into the European areas and then many
historical translations of the Roma started.
So
through our bloodline we can establish this time table. Over 1,000
years ago we were forced out of India after 7 very brutal attacks by
their King. The next mass migration is called the Aresajipe from
southwest Asia into Europe in the 14th century and then our last
migration into the U.S.A. after the World War 2
