Remarkably adaptable to changing conditions in different countries, Gypsies are versatile and earn their living by various means. Generally, there have been two conditions that a job must meet before it will be of interest to a gypsy. The first is it must allow the gypsy free travel. The second is for it to cause as little direct contact with non-gypsy, gaje, as possible. Services that cater to occasional needs and an ever-changing clientele are well suited to the Gypsy way of life.

Most Gypsies are peddlers selling what they have bought cheaply or selling what they have made themselves. There are certain staple Gypsy occupations, such as horse-trading, metalworking, and dealing in scrap metal. In gaining a livelihood, the women play their full part. It is they who often sell their wares from door to door and who do the fortune telling.

Generally Gypsy occupations are divided by sex. Men are the artisans while women offer services, such as fortune telling and selling what the men produce. This is not always the case as there are many women who are artisans. It is the women who bring in the money, and the women who are largely responsible for handling it.

METALWORKING

One area in which the Gypsy has traditionally excelled is that of metalwork. They have been known as metalworkers from the beginning of their history. They have made nails, arm, tools, and cooking equipment. They have been skilled at plating objects with tin, embossing and engraving jewelry . The Gypsy have been experts in all forms of metalwork, whether it be as tinsmiths, coppersmiths, silversmiths, or goldsmiths.

Gypsies have not only been master metalworkers, but they have also shown great ingenuity in devising relatively light equipment such as forges and hammers. These tools are necessary to their work and are specifically designed to be easily transported. Knife Grinding or blade sharpening, is a common occupation for many Gypsies.

ANIMAL TRAINERS

Horse-trading has long been a Gypsy affinity and a way of life. The horse has always been an important economic factor in the life of the Gypsy. The skills of the Gypsy in tending and curing the illnesses of horses have served them well for centuries. Often they would trade a good horse for a less healthy one, collecting needed money for the difference. By caring for these sick horses and putting them into good condition, they are later able to sell them for a higher price than the price originally paid.

Gypsies make a specialty of attending horse fairs as they are major occasions in their lives. They are adept at pointing out advantages in their own horses, while pointing out the disadvantages of those horses they are interested in buying.

Next to the horse the animal the Gypsies have shown great interest in is the bear. Gypsies have traditionally found work as bear leaders, men/women who could train bears for entertainment purposes. It is not uncommon to see a Gypsy leading a dancing bear through the streets and collecting coins from amused passersby.

ENTERTAINERS: MUSICIANS, BARDS, AND STORYTELLERS

Gypsies are also noted as entertainers, especially as musicians and dancers. The instruments traditionally preferred by Gypsy musicians have been the guitar, the lute, percussion instruments such as the cymbalom and drums. The cello and violin are also favored. Other instruments are zills, hand cymbals worn on the fingers, accordion, and panpipes and flutes.

The Gypsy skill at improvisation is well known. There is another type of music that is authentically Gypsy, a highly rhythmic progression of tones in which few or no instruments are used. The dominant sound is often that of clapping hands. This stirring music and dance, performed by proud men and women stamping their feet and snapping their fingers with awesome intensity and passion, is largely associated with the Gitanos tribe.

Gypsy women are also noted for the fluid grace of their dances and the haunting sensuality of the way they move across the floor to viola and drum. Many Gypsy women are highly paid by the gaje to dance for them in taverns. This is done sometimes, but with the Gypsy men attentive at all times for any defilement at the touch of gaje hands.

FORTUNETELLING

The occupation for which the Gypsy has been most famous is fortune telling, the foretelling of the future.

There are three main reasons that fortune telling appeals to the Gypsy. First, it gives them an aura of mystery and magic. Since it is one means of close contact with those who are not of the Gypsy, fortune tellers are useful in learning of the social, political, and economic climate of the region they are visiting. Their clients often take them into their confidence, revealing facets of local conditions the Gypsy would otherwise be unable to judge. Finally, of course, fortune telling is a relatively simple way of earning money.

Gypsies have been known to perform many kinds of predictions. They have read tea leaves, seen visions in crystal balls and scrying bowls, analyzed the future from reading cards, and from interpreting the significance of numbers, or numerology. They have practiced palmistry, judging a person's fate, character, and aptitudes from the shape of hands and fingers and the designs of lines in the hand.

Though the claim that their great powers of prediction come from supernatural sources, the real skill of fortune tellers lies in their remarkable abilities in judging human character and in manipulating human desires. She knows that most people remember what comes true and forget what does not. She knows, too, that she is capable of adding an exotic, exciting element to the life of non-gypsy. To please their believing clients, they most often predict a favorable outcome. There will often be mysterious warnings of perils that might well be avoided by preventatives (charms, talismans) provided, of course, by the Gypsy.

The concept of fortune telling contains several elements. One element is foretelling the future. Another element relates to healing powers. The healing elements of fortune telling are called "advising".

Good luck charms, amulets, and talismans are common among Gypsies. They are carried to prevent misfortune or heal sickness. Some Gypsies carry bread in their pockets as protection against bad luck, or bibaxt, and supernatural spirits or ghosts, called mulo'.

Gypsies also practice herbalism, and alchemy, as well as rune magic and the druidic arts.

  What is the Gypsy religion? The answer depends on who you ask…  Turks have been known to call them “Allahsiz insaniar” – godless. The Dutch, at one time, branded them “heathens”, “moon-men” was a popular French appellation of the enlightenment – and then there’s the remarkable Balkan folklore, "the Gypsy church was built of cheese, they ate their church, and for this reason", the story concludes, "the Gypsies have no religion".

  Ask a Gypsy his religion and he will likely say – Catholic, Muslim, Orthodox or any one of the proselytizing neo-Christian denominations that have been sweeping through the Gypsy camps. Western influence is an important component to defining the Roma religion since the level of integration into European society directly impacts the indigenous Roma belief system, known as Romanipen, settling at the base of their conscience and influencing their daily actions in however small or large a way.

  “Marginalized Roma” phenomenon that so often pops up in the social and political debate has managed to creep into academia on the topic of religion. Even though Romanipen, much like Christianity, Islam and Judaismon, possesses a personal theology, developed sense of morality and taboos, congregation, clergy and sacred text, a "religion" definition is time and again omitted in place of superficial labels like “philosophy”, “culture” or “set of laws”.

Understanding Our Romanipen

   Little is known of the Roma religion because unlike other popular religions, Roma do not proselytize. They do not accept converts since Romanipen is a birthright. You are either born of the faith or not. A “non-Roma”, in a strange turn of events, falls into the shadowy category “gadjo”, a derogatory term among Roma with a varying degree of definitions much like the majority label "Gypsy", "tzigan", "tatar" or even "crow"... Who is a Roma can be a complicated issue that resonates of the Jewish debate, “who is a Jew?” – and not surprisingly, the responses are quite similar…

   The Romanipen religion is composed of three major elements: a theology centering on universal dualism. Dualism defines the universe as a harmonious balance between two opposing principles: good and evil, light and dark, hot and cold, etc.  Secondly, ancestral worship and finally a congregation formed through a brotherhood bounded by a mutual bloodline.  Secrecy and isolation is the key to our survival and therefore the sacred text are never put to paper, instead preserved by orally transmitting to other trusted members of the congregation, generation after generation.  A long history of nomadism have done away with the concrete place of worship so often associated to organized religion; the Roma church is anywhere the fire burns; Romanipen is a religion that has no church as an actual building….

   The worship is performed by honoring of the ancestors, the Roma saints, carried out in the day-by-day following of the traditions taught by the elders, just as the previous elders had taught, a line theoretically tracing all the way back to our Hindu-Indian origins at the banks of the Ganges. These traditions come to light in the dress codes, family roles, and overall “doing things the gypsy way”.  Observing the sacred traditions appeases the ancestors who much like the long line of Christian saints guide and protect the family. They guard them from evil spirits and bless them with the gifts of “baxt” (good luck).  Luck is not perceived as unexplained, unpredictable and uncontrollable force, but rather as karma. Everything has a cause revealed by a good day of sales - finding money on the street corner - the seemingly insignificant stubbing your toe - to the losing of your hair. These are all rewards or punishments of the family’s behavior and therefore we Roma follow our traditions on a daily basis "with every footprint" out of respect, honor, duty, and yes, also fear.

Ancestor worship

   “Phralipe”, Roma brotherhood, forms the community. There is no sense of individuality in Roma life but a collective body of family called Familia and community and this forms both our identity and purpose of being; “all for one – and one for all”.  “Phralipe” offers a valuable support system that also collectively disciplines by exclusion varying between uninvited to community events to the extreme and permanent excommunication, a punishment considered worse than death.

Brotherhood/Phralipe

    Christianity is a religion of strict morals yet which withholds condemnation till the final “judgment day” when an individual’s good and bad deeds are collectively weighed.  This added time allows the sinner the chance to experience on his own and "find his way". In addition, there are means of correcting past transgressions through penance and a little something called “absolution” that can completely erase the slate clean. Roma, on the other hand, follow a karma justice system that strikes as you go along.

   The cornerstone of our Roma belief system is the concept of dualism.  The Roma perspective is a universe of conflicting forces: good and evil, light and dark, hot and cold, that magically comes together forming a harmonious balance revealed in the daily rising of the sun - then its set, the changing seasons as well as death of the old followed by new life.  The world and all on it is a balance and maintaining this harmonious balance is the key to good living.  Everything in this world has its place on the shelf of life and must be maintained in that order it’s been placed to keep the balance.  A break in the order results in an unbalanced universe and the tipping of the shelf which we all know results in an ungodly mess on the floor (chaos).

Katma and Our Karma Symbol

   All religions acknowledge the human conflict between good and evil. While the mightier force is commonly awarded to the power of good, like they say, “love conquers all”, Romanipen, fears the negative, evil, as the stronger entity; it's tricky and sneaky, so that letting even a single drop into the area of good can spread and contaminate and ultimately lead to ruin. Therefore the pollutant (marime our maxime) is religiously kept in its place and forbidden from mixing with what is pure (uzo).

   This balance of opposing forces is everywhere and in everything and which includes the human body, most notably the mystical female body that through the miracle of childbirth offers a holy gateway into the celestial spirit world of unborn souls.  Above the waist where the child’s milk is distributed is clean and therefore contrary to modern western morality there is absolutely no shame in exposed breast.  The area below the waist, however, is unclean and must be carefully covered to prevent the spreading of impurities (“maxrime”).  One of most threatening acts a woman can perform is lifting the front of her dress and transmitting these impurities onto others. Those infected by the spread must immediately go through a purification ritual of removing the stain with a thorough washing.

   Gadjo are another area of concern as they are full blown “maxrime” and therefore a wall of separation must be thoroughly maintained.  In this instance “maxrime” takes on a more pragmatic synonymous meaning for “cultural change” that once let in can spread like a plaque by knocking-out one seemingly insignificant custom at a time (for example, women wearing pants) leading into further integration until ultimately assimilation takes over destroying the culture, identity and race.

   Socializing with Gajo is only through business.  In some cases separate sets of dishes, utensils and cups are set aside reserved only for gajo guest for fear of “maxrime” spreading through the food.  Any contact with things “maxrime” are followed with immediate purification ritual of intense washing. It is seriously guarded because evil introduced into the family disrupts the harmonious balance  that can move about under the skin like a virus spawning illnesses ranging from the common cold to cancers.

Numerology and first letters

Numerology has a great deal to do with the numeric value of the alphabet and there are many legends and theories about how this came about.

The alphabet itself was inspired by pictorial representations

that recorded elaborate stories. These full pictographs originally

were abbreviated to form hieroglyphics with each symbol

depicting a word. As more time elapsed the glyphs were

further reduced to represent individual sounds and then the

consonants and vowels that we know today.

The modern alphabet that numerological systems are based on is derived from an earlier hieroglyphic system that is still used by Japanese and Chinese cultures. Each letter also symbolizes a number. This has remained unchanged, even though our speech patterns have evolved to make some sounds obsolete.

Each sound is thought to also have an esoteric spiritual

implication, with an essence that can be described as a number. Even more meaning is given to the very first letter of the word.

Here is a breakdown of the numerical vibrations of the letters in

the alphabet according to ancient numerology systems that

originated in Babylon and Egypt. In these systems, personality was analyzed by the first letter of the name.

A is the numerical equivalent of 1 and symbolizes confidence. When it's the first vowel in a name, the person tends to be bold. On the negative side, A can be critical of efforts of others.

B is the numerical equivalent of 2 and represents our emotions. A person with a B first letter is friendly and a homebody. On the

negative side, B can be self absorbed if not a bit greedy.

C is the numerical equivalent of 3 and represents energy. C people are talented and get along well with others. Negatively, C people can be ruthless and cruel.

D is the numerical equivalent of 4 and represents balance. It is

very powerful and is the letter associated with business. When it is the first consonant in a name the person is very tired. On the negative side a D person can be stubborn.

E is the second vowel in the alphabet and is the numerical

equivalent of 5. It is a is warm hearted, loving and compassionate. The E can be unreliable and a bit flaky.

W is the numerical equivalent of 5 and represents self-expression. These first letter people are artistic. Negatively, W can be greedy and take too many risks.

X is the numerical equivalent of 6 and represents sexuality. This

letter is very sexy. Unfaithfulness is an unpleasant character

trait as well.

Y is the penultimate letter in our alphabet and is the numerical

equivalent of 7. This number loves freedom and dislikes restraint of any kind. However Y can be indecisive and lazy.

Z is the final letter in our alphabet and is the numerical

equivalent of 8. It represents hope and peace. Negatively, Z first

letter people often act without thinking and without regard for

others.

numerology but it is also a very ancient way that is often

very accurate.

Astrology and Intuition IS A Dynamic Duo

Each of the twelve astrological signs symbolizes unique ways that intuition can weave its magic through them. In my opinion, no one sign has a monopoly on making use of intuition. The universe filters its magnificent collective waves of intelligence through the signs, which act as filters to manifest this energy into meaningful reality. The signs point the way for each of us to express our intuition creatively and with clear sense of purpose.

When you get your astrological chart done based on your date, place, and time of birth, it becomes evident that your consciousness is a mixture of the twelve signs. Life is a twelve-step process! Each sign offers us a path to tune into our intuition and take us a step closer to greater evolutionary growth.

Each Sun sign belongs to an element: Fire, Earth, Air, and Water. The Fire signs (Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius) are fast to act on intuitive impulses, making the world respond quickly to their goals. Emotion is similar in nature to the Fire element; Intellect fits with the Air Element; Sensation is very much like the Earth element; Intuition is linked to the Water element. How might the sign Aries make use of intuition? This Fiery spirit is like a laser beam of enthusiasm. The warrior sign can be bold to put intuition to work while everyone else is still thinking about taking the first step! Creative power manifests like a bolt of lightning. However, there is another side of the coin to consider. There are times intuitive forces are asking this Mars-ruled fire sign to slow down (the reason being that Aries can actually get greater results when pausing for a moment to consider the consequences of actions). Also, long-range planning or adopting a little structure can empower the intended plan. The reward for taking the time to deepen an intuitive awareness is spending less energy to get the same result, maybe even a better one. Taurus is careful when using intuition. This Earthy spirit moves as though each step along the way must have solid ground underfoot. On occasion, the universe asks Taurus to allow the intuition it sends greater spontaneity to roam more freely to point the way to new abundant turf. Intuition will entice Taurus to drop a resistance to trying alternative ways to happiness and seeking greater challenges. There are times when intuitive forces will encourage this Venus-ruled sign to have greater belief in ideals and not fear fighting for them. The synchronicity that might result when Taurus has faith in intuition is a life of balanced inner peace sitting along side an outer life that is aligned with creative potential.

Gemini is fast-thinking and mentally excited when using intuition. This Airy spirit moves briskly through life, skipping along with ideas that constantly pulsate through those electrifying brain synapses. Diversity and open options are as dear to Gemini as oxygen is to breathe. Intuitive flashes stimulate this sign to move quickly with mental objectivity and with laser-like perceptions that stay eager for new information. The universe sends intuitive clues to Gemini about networking with the right people and keeping abreast of the latest societal trends. Communication is what inspires this Mercury-ruled sign to make use of intuition and it is the gateway for it to manifest. There are instances when the universe asks Gemini to intuitively change course and pursue deeper knowledge that can take this curious sign to self-mastery. The synchronicity that can manifest when Gemini learns not to fear using emotional energy is a life filled with a clearer mental balance and less psychological burnout.

Cancer becomes emotional and intrigued by the use of intuition. Honest! This Watery spirit knows something magical is taking place and eventually becomes a witness to the intuitive process itself as events transpire connected to utilizing this energy. Intuition is more of a ritual for Cancer, and for some of this sign a deep spiritual/religious experience. Home, family, pets, and nature are allies. The universe at times asks Cancer to initiate a plan to act on but then suddenly sends a second wave of intuition that says pause. It is this rhythm of move and pause that allows Cancer to more clearly adopt a life script that fits its needs. Some perceive Cancer as complicated to understand for this reason, although this Moon-ruled sign simply sees this as business as usual. The Ocean’s tides have a similar pulse in that they come in and move out with predictable movement, and so does this lunar-ruled sign.
